Kitty glanced over at the rainbow-haired girl, watching her goggle at the crowd while nervously tugging at the hem of her skirt. Rain was falling lightly, just that gauzy mist that was enough to tease winter waiting in the wings. "C'mon," she held out her hand, waiting for Mia Rivera to take it. "We're never going to get in there if we don't get in line!"
"But look!" Mia pointed at the neon unicorn rearing on the sign. "It's like something out of my dreams," she murmured, looking back over at Kitty before giving her an impulsive hug. "Thanks so much for telling me we should come out here!"
"Yeah," she shrugged, affecting that same cocky aloofness that had so vexed most of the FFW roster. "I wanted to show you this side of Cardiff. This place, well, I've got a lot of fond memories of."
"You've been to Wales before?"
Kitty sighed, painfully aware of Mia's small fingers entwined with her own. Still. "Yes, I worked the circuit here for a few months, many years back when I was with WCWF. Became a bit of a fan favorite. That was right after I married Jackson. I did a whole European tour. Six months across this whole area. Berlin. Paris. Scotland-"
"Oh wow!" Mia giggled, overcome with sudden mirth. She'd seen pictures of Kitty's ex-husband and still had trouble picturing the two of them together.
"What's so funny?" Kitty demanded.
"Nothing." Mia said softy. "It's just that you and him. I honestly don't get how that ever worked out. You're so much alike and it's just-"
"I was different then," Kitty snapped, bristling as she pulled Mia towards the head of the line, "more like you. I didn't know what I wanted and I didn't have the first clue what was doing with my life. I desperately needed someone to guide me."
"Oh," Mia shrugged, "because I heard you were a total bitch who chewed people up and spit them out. Which is kinda funny when you think about it. You've been so nice to me. And I mean, really, you knew I got with Jackson when you were still with him and it's like you don't care."
Kitty's teeth ground but she kept smiling, "we were already on the outs."
"But... like, you're not even scary! People walk around on eggshells when they hear your name and here you are being the coolest ever to a rookie like me!"
One eyebrow quirked as she looked at Mia. "No? That doesn't bode well for my plans, then. I was hoping to intimidate Isabella. I need to remind her that she's wearing MY belt. There goes my entire gameplan. Are you sure I'm not scary, hon?"
Mia didn't reply, instead she was stroking the velvet rope they were standing beside, a wistful expression on her face. Kitty knew better than to break her reverie, instead turning her attention to the massive bouncer who barred their entrance.
The bouncer looked at them, staring in fascination as Kitty smirked. She knew that every asset was on display in her black and pink leather corset and those leather pants that almost seemed painted on her slim frame. Mia was dressed like a schoolgirl, complete with cute little plaid skirt and matching tie with her blouse tied to expose her midriff. "Are you full?" Kitty asked sweetly.
"Ah, love. We've always got room for two more birds like you!" The words were rushed, coming out from between clenched teeth as Kitty stroked his cheek, slipping a few folded bills into his shirt pocket.
She nodded, a satisfied look on her face. "Good!" She reached for Mia's hand again, pulling her into the loud music and the wash of colors.
"So pretty…" Mia whispered, watching the play of the laser lights off the glass blocks in the center of the room. They'd been arranged to create geometric patterns, but to Kitty they just looked like Tetris pieces.
"I always wanted to build a wall out of those blocks," Kitty said, leaning against the bar and snapping her fingers to get the attention of the bartender. She ordered two drinks, and handed one off to Mia, who was still grinning wistfully as though she had a head injury after all.
"I always wanted to live in a rainbow!" Mia said with a smile.
Kitty laughed, the sound surprising them both. "I like this," she confessed, pulling Mia towards an empty booth. "I never know what you're going to say. Mia, would it be weird of me to ask if you wanna dance?"
She glanced towards the floor, and looked back at Kitty, her gaze clear and direct. "Maybe later. Something tells me that you didn't bring me here to dance. I mean... you didn't, right?"
"Can't bullshit you, can I?" Kitty drained the rest of her drink and set the empty glass down before resting her elbows on the table, peering at Mia. "No, well then maybe I did have an ulterior motive. I want you to team with me, Mia."
"What?" Mia's eyes went wide. "But what about Anita Simms?"
"I don't know." Kitty said softly, shaking her head. "Tanya's gone, and I don't know if Violent Delight is even going to exist anymore. I just want to team with someone I trust. Someone I can count on." She stared at Mia intently, "let me ask you this: do you trust me?"
"Look," Mia crowed, pointing over her shoulder. "A butterfly!"
Kitty rolled her eyes, wishing that Mia's moments of lucidity were more than two seconds long. Something tickled her arm as she reached for her empty glass, and she looked down to find a monarch butterfly alighting there. She moved her arm towards Mia, trying not to disturb the beautiful creature. "I wonder," she whispered, "how it got in here."
"It should be dead." Mia said knowingly, in a hushed voice. "It's winter."
"Yeah."
"It's an omen." She said reverently, her brown eyes fastened on the wings as they fluttered slightly. "Something that shouldn't be here, but it is. It's winter, Kitty. I can't... I shouldn't be here."
"Nonsense," Kitty said, trying to hold still and finding it most difficult as she could feel the nervous twitches starting. Her foot tapped absently under the table, the movement causing her arm to jitter. The butterfly moved on, bringing a disappointed sound from Mia's lips. "Why are you in this business?" Kitty asked suddenly. "I mean, why are you a wrestler? Shouldn't you be in school, or partying your face off having fun like most girls your age?"
"It's fun." Mia said simply, "I mean it's better than stripping, after all. And school... well I can do that anytime, you know?"
Kitty snorted. "That's not saying much. Anything is better than stripping, unless you're one of Christian Kincaid's little whores."
"Yes, but," she hesitated, shaking her head. It wasn't her place to contradict a veteran. "You don't understand, Kitty... this is all so new and wonderful! It's like a dream come true!"
"Maybe I should tell you why I'm here."
"You could." Mia replied with a secretive smile, "but I already know."
"No," she said, shaking his head with a sad smile, "I don't think you do. I don't think anyone really knows. Dominance, for me that's the catalyst. I like to feel it, I want to feel it! I love being in control! I love winning. That's my burden, Mia. That's why I'm here. I want to make people suffer. I want to be the best and I need to be on top. I need that belt back because it's the only thing that matters."
"Why are you so sad?" Her own eyes were misted with tears as she looked at Kitty. "If you love these things so much, why are you sad? I mean, if you have that goal and you're working towards it, why do you look..."
"I hate my life." Kitty's voice came out soft, "my husband... he loves me in his own way, but Alex is busy. So busy. He's writing a book. He's making business deals and I'm still trying to prove that marrying him wasn't so that I could buy my way into the title scene and..." she paused. Why was she telling Mia any of this? "I feel empty. That's what I'm talking about, Mia. Do you understand? Money can't buy happiness or love. Neither can success, although one would think it would place you in a better position to find that. Sadly, it never has for me."
"You just want to be loved." She nodded sagely, "I get that."
Kitty's laughter was harsh, self-deprecating. "Yeah, am I that transparent?" She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, interlacing her fingers under her chin. "I find, generally, that being honest like this usually drives my friends," she chuckled softly, "away." She concluded, a wry smile turning up the corner of her mouth.
"Good thing I like you then, isn't it?"
The lights swirled, the colors dizzying as Kitty leapt to her feet and pulled Mia out on the dance floor. Her excitement was contagious as they joined the throng of gyrating bodies. Kitty kept her hands around Mia's slim waist, for fear of losing her in the crowd. "Close your eyes." She whispered against her ear as she bent closer. "Just for a second, and feel the music."
Mia complied, losing herself in the sensation, as the throbbing tempo washed over her, taking her away with the music. She giggled, feeling the music flow through her being. "Look now, Mia, look up."
She did, just as the bubbles and foam began to fall from the ceiling. The lights played off the bubbles, the foam tinted blue, like the peaceful ocean currents in her dreams. In a matter of moments, they were soaked, but both were laughing breathlessly as Kitty pulled her out of the crowd.
Kitty had a delighted smile on her lips that transformed her for a moment. She actually looked less like that ice queen bitch she was known for, "thanks, Mia. For coming. For trusting me."
Mia felt a little prickle of guilt as she smiled back at Kitty, knowing how much Isabella and Kitty hated each other. It was probably going to be a disaster in the making, but she resolved to keep this new friendship to herself for now. She knew Kitty was at odds with The Power Trip and she knew they saw her as the weakest link. "I'm glad I came," she finally replied, nodding. "We're going to be good friends, I can tell."
Kitty smirked, "the absolute best." And if the plan worked, she could use Mia to undermine Samantha Star's plans and get herself back into Power Trip. The girl meant nothing in the grand scheme. If she got hurt in the process, even better. Maybe it would teach her a lesson about not trusting every last person who crossed her path. At the end of the day, the girl was expendable. She'd probably disappear and never resurface again.
